Low-cost airline Flybe will generate nearly 500 jobs in Norwich by next year and create a further 6 routes out of Norwich Airport in the coming months. The airline currently flies 15 routes out of Norwich and a further six routes are expected to be announced in June.
Speaking at a press conference to review the first year's operation and launch of the new destinations Murcia, Faro and Guernsey, the airlines chief commercial officer Mike Rutter said the airline had transformed the city. He said Flybe has increased inbound tourism by 50 percent in Norwich in the past year ploughing at least £45 million inward spend into the city economy.
'40% of the Paris route is from the Paris end so it means we can grow tourism into East Anglia. Our connections have made a major difference to UK cities. There is now no need to travel to London.'
Flybe's presence at Norwich Airport has already created more than 170 jobs. Of those 30 jobs are Flybe crew, engineers flight staff and 140 are extra jobs created at the airport and in the economy as a result of Flybe's presence. This figure is expected to reach 400 to 450 next year.
In its first year since it launched in the city Flybe has carried 170,000 passengers and next year it plans to carry 400,000 to 450,000. The airline links with many destinations where people in Norfolk have second homes such as Alicante, Faro, Malaga and Murcia and Norwich is one of Flybe's fastest growing bases.
