Airlines should make extra charges clear to passengers

Consumer watchdogs have called on airlines to come clean on extra charges levied on passengers at some UK airports when passengers book tickets. So-called airport development fees (ADFs) at Newquay and Norwich Airport have been imposed to fund improvements to facilities or to cover operating losses. When passengers fly from either of these airports, they have to pay an ADF of up to £20 for a family of 4 at the terminal. Both reserve the right to turn passengers away if you refuse to pay the fee.
But many passengers are not aware that they will have to pay an ADF until they arrive at the airport, as airlines do not include them in the ticket price, and some do not even mention them in their booking process. Ryanair, for example, does not warn Newquay travellers when they book that they will be charged £5 per person.
Trading Standards travel spokesman Bruce Treloar has called upon airlines at these airports to make the fee clear to passengers when they book flights that they face the fee. And the consumer body the Air Transport Users Council says ADFs are unfair and that it is concerned that the trend - with fees previously mooted at Liverpool Airport - will spread to other regional hubs.
