Problem over duty free bags
28.11.06
Passengers travelling to worldwide destinations from Norwich Airport via KLM flights to Schiphol Airport in Holland are having duty free goods confiscated, it has been reported. Dutch officials claim the clear bags provided by shops at Norwich Aiprort do not comply with EU rules, saying the bags should be sealed with a special red label.
Norwich Airport's managers say they have checked with the Department of Trade and Industry who approved their heat sealed bags, but the two airports cannot agree. Richard Jennings from Norwich Airport said: 'I believe we are doing everything right but the Dutch officials are interpreting the rules differently. It appears to only affect transit passengers from Norwich. Luton and Stansted are not affected.'
A spokesman for Schiphol said that the airport security staff were only applying rules set down by the European Union following recent bomb scares and most of the seizures concerned passengers from Ireland and Spain.
