New Norwich Airport car park drop off fee withdrawn - for now
26.01.08
Norwich Airport has forced a car park operator to scrap a passenger drop-off fee just one day after its launch following a flood of angry calls, the Eastern Daily Press reports. However, the relief for air travellers could be short lived as today airport bosses are due to consider introducing their own parking levy.
Passengers at the airport were hit with a £1.90 charge on Tuesday when the 15-minute free parking period intended to allow people to drop off and pick up passengers was abolished by operator NCP without warning. However, by mid-morning on Wednesday the short period of grace had been reinstated following intervention by airport managing director Richard Jenner.
But the fee could yet be reinstated. Mr Jenner told the newspaper that a board meeting early next month will decide whether the airport should impose a nominal fee for the first 15 minutes' parking, meaning those collecting or dropping passengers could be hit with a charge of about 50p. He said the airport had been pushed into reviewing the car parking fee structure following abuse of the grace period, with taxi drivers waiting for passengers often entering and leaving the car park several times to avoid paying fees.
Mr Jenner said that NCP had heard of the possible abolishment of the free 15-minute arrangement and had 'jumped the gun' by reverting to the £1.90 charge that existed before the drop-off bays were blocked off. He said: 'What we are planning on doing is changing the structure of the airport car parking tariff so there is not this big jump between some of the bands and to rationalise the differences between long and short term rates.'
