Residents unhappy over night flight fees

Local residents are angry after Norwich Airport admitted they receive extra money every time a night flight passes through the terminal, the Norwich Evening News reports.
Those living near the airport, who are campaigning about night flight noise levels, say the penalty fees that airlines pay for breaking an agreed curfew are an incentive to the airport to allow flights outside those times. But Norwich airport's owner, Omniport, says the penalty fee is eaten up by the extra costs of getting staff to work beyond their normal hours.
In June 1988, Norwich City Council, Broadland District Council and the airport signed an agreement that there would be no regular scheduled or charter flights between 23:00 and 06:00 each day and that airlines breaching these flight times should be fined five times the normal landing fee.
Airport managing director Richard Jenner told the newspaper that he was happy to redraft the agreement but added: 'Last year the council found there had been 41 flights outside the restricted hours in 75 weeks and that none of these breached the agreement. Sometimes flights are delayed for technical reasons and we are allowed to let them take off.'
