Investigation after deer shot at airport

Police and the RSPCA are investigating an incident in which a deer was shot by staff at Norwich Airport earlier this week, the Eastern Daily Press reports.
Airport managing director Richard Jenner has insisted the deer was humanely destroyed after it broke its leg while staff attempted to shoo it off of the runway. However, an 'airport source' told the EDP that the animal was shot at and deliberately run over.
Mr Jenner said the Chinese water deer had been running across the runway on Wednesday and staff in a vehicle had tried to guide it towards an open crash gate. He said: 'When they tried to stop it running across to the runway, it ran into the vehicle, breaking its leg. It was obviously suffering so they shot it once behind the ear. It wasn't run over.'
A police spokesman told the newspaper: 'We are looking into a report that a deer was shot within the perimeter of the airport. We are working with the RSPCA to establish whether the animal was destroyed within the protocol which ensures the safety of landing aircraft.'
