Watchdog criticises new departure tax
16.03.07
A Norwich Airport watchdog has criticised airport bosses for failing to consult on plans to introduce a new £3 passenger departure tax, the Eastern Daily Press reports. The Norwich Airport Consultative Committee said they felt as if they had been 'run over' following the announcement and added that they plan to hold an emergency meeting with bosses.
John Pennells, Chairman of the Committee, said he was shocked at the tax and wanted to call a meeting with airport management. Broadland District and Norfolk County Councillor, Shelagh Gurney, a member of the committee, said the first thing members knew about the tax was reported in the news.
However Norwich Airport Managing Director, Richard Jenner, said the tax was a commercial issue and not in the committee's remit as it was set up to consult on community issues. He added that the committee is being consulted regarding the expansion plans for which the tax is being imposed, but that the tax was never mentioned at the last meeting with the committee as it was a confidential matter at that point.
