'Shadow of Stansted' holds back Flybe
14.09.08
The ‘shadow of Stansted’ has stopped Flybe from increasing its operations at Norwich Airport as much as hoped, the Eastern Daily Press reports. Mike Rutter, the regional budget airline's chief operating officer, said Flybe was still battling to make its mark on passengers within an hour and a half of Norwich - and claimed its airport development fee was also hampering its efforts.
Mr Rutter said that Flybe intended to serve routes from Norwich for the long-term. But he told the newspaper: ‘The shadow of Stansted means that it has been very difficult to grow aggressively in the way we had hoped and originally envisaged.'
‘We won the battle to get people within a one hour catchment area to fly from Norwich. But for an airport of that size, you've also got to win the battle to get people in the hour and a half catchment. So far we've struggled to do that; people still seem addicted to Stansted and the joys of security check-ins and queues and car parking charges.'
‘Also, what should be a straightforward economic choice with people opting for Norwich has partly been queried by the airport development fee.’
