New Holland flights take off
11.04.08
A company has launched flights between Norwich Airport and the north of Holland, aiming to build on historic trading links. 600 years ago sailing ships plied between the Hanseatic ports in the two regions. More recently, from the 1960s, the synergy came through offshore energy, as gas companies straddled the North Sea with operations on both shores. Now the first commercial flights between Norwich and Den Helder, which is about 90km north of Amsterdam, hope to build a direct air link between two areas with a lot in common.
Both locations have gas companies serving the southern North Sea; a regenerating harbour looking for new business as fisheries decline; fertile farmland sprouting agriculture and horticulture; and tourism where visitors are drawn by unspoilt landscape, maritime heritage and bird watching.
The bond between the two has been strengthened by the launch of a new Skydrift commercial air route, aimed mainly at whisking gas industry managers between the two important centres. The company will operate the 45 minute flights to Den Helder, close to the Island of Texel, on Mondays and Fridays at 09:00 and 17:00.
