Emergency exercise today
09.02.08
A major emergency exercise is being carried out at Norwich Airport today to test the response of staff and their co-ordination with local emergency services. The exercise is a compulsory part of the airport's licence from the Civil Aviation Authority.
Airport staff, police, paramedics and fire and rescue workers take part in the drill, lasting for over two hours. About 150 civilian volunteers will also take part, playing the roles of passengers on board an aircraft and families arriving in response to an incident. It will be witnessed by a number of guests, including a team from Oman airport in the Middle East.
The exercise is being coordinated by the Norfolk Major Incident Team (NorMIT), which is part of Norfolk County Council's emergency planning unit. NorMIT manager Sarah Alcock said: ‘The exercise, which will involve a simulated incident airside, has been planned to meet CAA needs, as well as exercising some of our emergency arrangements in Norfolk.'
