Norwich Airport has raised £1m through controversial per passenger Airport Development Fee, and its boss told the Evening News that the money was being well spent to benefit those who use the hub. The £3 fee was launched despite widespread condemnation last April, and will be increased rise to £5 in September.
In an interview with the Evening News, airport director Richard Jenner, revealed that £1m has been paid by passengers in the 15 months since it was brought in. However, he defended the charges, saying that they had helped pay for key improvements at the hub.
Mr Jenner told the newspaper that the money had gone towards a £15m investment in better facilities and safety, including a £1m training rig for firefighters, a new £425,000 fire engine and £400,000 worth of communications equipment for the Air Traffic Control tower.
The fee will raise a third of the projected £12m to be spent over the next 5 years on further improvements. Mr Jenner said : 'The vast majority of people are quite happy to pay it rather than trek off to Stansted.’
