New £1m fire training aid
01.11.08
The controversial passenger fee at Norwich Airport has helped pay for a £1m simulator that will help train fire fighters to deal with a variety of aircraft crashes, the Norwich Evening News reports.
The simulator, which has been designed to replicate the different aircraft types that land at Norwich, can provide realistic aviation accident scenarios to train and test firemen and other emergency personnel. Inside the simulator there are overhead lockers, tilted floors to replicate landings at 40 and 45-degree angles, and even a cockpit, galleys and toilet cubicles.
The airport's team of 32 fire fighters will train on the rig about once a week, practising scenarios inside and outside the 30-metre replica fuselage. They can practise rescuing passengers in realistic heat and smoke conditions using dummies placed on the seating.
